Grand Theft Auto VI will come this year, and it is expected to be a great success with 40 million sales and $ 3 billion in revenues in its first year. Its launch looms so big that some editors are apparently considering delaying their games to avoid a shock.
Three anonymous editors of “important” video games told The Game Business that they are “ready” to delay the next projects due to GTA 6. The report did not say what these companies are, but an anonymous boss of “one of the world’s largest games editors,” he told TGB that rockstar launches “always stink a lot of money, and more importantly, time outside the market.”
“We do not want to be close to that. We are working on multiple different plans for our titles,” said the anonymous executive. Another senior executive not identified in an editor said that even without GTA 6 reaching the market, it has become “immensely difficult to find free time to shine new games. Time is the real shortage for us, not money. It is difficult out there.”
Two anonymous developers of the “Top 10 Live Service Games” told TBG that they are not planning any important update of their titles at the time of the launch of GTA 6.
A name head of study told TGB that GTA 6 is “basically a huge meteorite and that we will remain away from the explosion zone.” A different developer said that “it makes no sense” to try to compete with GTA 6 and that it could be smarter “prepare to recover the players once the emotion has begun to disappear.”
GTA 6 will officially launch in autumn 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, but each launch of Rockstar Games that goes back a decade has been delayed, so it would be remarkable if GTA 6 is No delayed. Take-Two Boss Strauss Zelnick has acknowledged that GTA 6 could be delayed.
The editors distrust of launching near GTA 6 is not a new concern. At the end of 2024, it was reported that many editors were waiting to assign launch dates to their own titles until Rockstar confirmed a date for GTA 6. More recently, an analyst said that some companies could not survive if they do not properly plan their launch schedules around GTA 6.
GTA 6 that reaches the market could also help lift the general video game industry, since a game of that magnitude is expected to attract new or fallen players. Ubisoft, meanwhile, said that his own games of games grow when a great game comes out as a new entry in the GTA series.
In related news, Greg Rice of Day of the Devs and PlayStation recently said that there is fear that GTA 6 is “sucking all the space” of the industry, but this might not tell the whole story.
GTA 6 is the first new entry in the main series since GTA V. of 2013, that game has enjoyed enormous success, selling more than 200 million copies and generating countless additional income from GTA online.
