Senator Bernie Sanders has become one of the most prominent Trump critics in the nation. The Senate is celebrating a A-rama vote this weekend to try to approve the tax cuts for the rich budget, so the combat oligarchy tour resumes Next weekend with a stop at Los Angeles, CA.
Meanwhile, Vermont’s independent senator has some things to say about Trump’s commercial war.
Senator Sanders said in a statement:
As someone who helped lead the effort against disastrous free trade agreements without restrictions with China, Mexico and other low -salaries countries, I understand that we need commercial policies that benefit US workers, not only the CEO of large corporations. And that includes specific tariffs that can be a powerful tool to prevent corporations from subcontracting US jobs and factories abroad. In a nutshell: we need a rational, well thought out and fair trade policy. Trump rates on the board are not the way to do it. We do not need a general and arbitrary sales tax on imported goods that will increase the prices of the products that the American people desperately need. We should be doing everything possible to reduce prices, not make them incredibly higher.
In addition, and most importantly, what Trump is doing is illegal and another step towards authoritarianism. When pushing its tariffs, it is usurping the power of Congress and annuling existing agreements under “emergency” provisions, when there are no real emergencies. In other words, he is increasing more and more power in his own hands. That is unacceptable.
