When costing the 895 goal of his career on Sunday against the islanders of New York, Ovechkin broke the 894 Wayne Gretzky record of 894.
Gretzky had maintained the title only for more than 31 years, until Friday, when Ovechkin tied it with two goals against the Chicago Blackhawks.
He only took one more game for number 8 to be alone at the top of the NHL registration books.
Timely in the power game, Ovechkin took a Tom Wilson pass and defeated the goalkeeper of the Ilya Sorokin islanders with a wrist shot from the top of the circle in the second period.
This was the first time that the 39 -year -old scored in Sorokin, making him the 183 newspaper that Ovechkin has defeated.
The 895 goal of the Russian end came in its 1,487º regular season game, the same number of games that Wayne Gretzky played in his career.
And, by coincidence, the 894th goal of Gretzky was also scored against the islanders.
