Nemanja Matic has fired the Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana after the Cameroonian made comments suggesting that the current United team is much better than the previous ones. The Serbian midfielder, who made more than 100 appearances for the club between 2017 and 2022, did not hold on his response.
In a strong reprimand reported by Fabrizio Romano, Matic said:
“Onana said they are much better than us? When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in the story of Man United, you must take care of what you are talking about.”
He went further to name United’s legendary stops to emphasize his point:
“If they were Van der Sar, Schmeichel or Gea saying that, ok … but Onana, is one of the worst.”
The dispute seems to come from the recent ONANA comments that compare the era of ten hag with the squadrons of the past, and many fans disagree with what they saw as lack of respect for former players.
Onana, who joined Inter Milan in 2023, has supported a turbulent spell between the sticks. From the first errors of the Champions League to the inconsistent form of the League, its mandate has been everything less soft. Despite the slight improvements this season, many fans and experts still question their reliability.
Matic, now in Lyon, is known for his leadership and quiet behavior, so this public reprimand indicates how strongly he feels about protecting the legacy of Past United teams.
While the drama plays outside the field, we hope that United’s current form will finally speak more than the words.
