At least five nurses who work on the same floor as a hospital in the Boston area have been diagnosed with brain tumors, and are looking for answers.
The nursing union at the hospital, the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA), told Fox News Digital in a statement that is actively supporting nurses at the Newton-Wellesley hospital in Newton, “which they have presented serious medical concerns, focused on brain tumors diagnoses in the maternity unit of the 5th floor.”
“We recognize that nurses and many other people want immediate information about the situation,” MNA continued. “This urgency comes from a place of concern for the health of nurses, their families and patients, an urgency we share.”
The MNA also said that it is working to “complete an independent scientific investigation” in the diagnoses.

“That effort is underway and can take additional weeks,” MNA said. “The research is being carried out by the MNA health and safety division, which consists of occupational health nurses, in collaboration with the Newton-Wellesley nurses.”
In addition, the nursing union said it has received more than 300 responses from surveys, emails and telephone calls of current and previous nurses, as well as other current and previous hospital employees, with respect to their health concerns.

According to the reports, Newton-Wellely carried out his own exam in December and discovered that in April, 11 staff members who worked, at some point and in varying degrees, on the fifth floor of the hospital, had been interviewed for the health and occupational safety of the hospital, according to a memorandum obtained Boston.com.
The hospital determined that five cases were benign brain tumors of three different types, and it was determined that six cases were not brain tumors in all health concerns, according to other things, according to the Memo.

The investigation “did not find environmental risks that could be linked to the development of a brain tumor,” said Jonathan Sonis, associate medical director, and Sandy Muse, nursing director, in a statement to Boston.com.
“According to these results, we can reassure the members of our team dedicated at the Mass General Brigham/Newton-Wellesley hospital and all our patients who there is no environmental risk in our facilities,” the statement continued. “As always, the health and well -being of our staff, doctors and patients is our absolute priority.”
The OHS review discovered that 668 radiographs were performed with portable machines on the fifth floor of Newton-Wellesley between 2020 and 2024, doubling the risk of exposure to radiation compared to the daily exposure to daily radiation for nurses that are approximately one meter from the machine, according to Boston.com.
“Even if a staff member had been present for all these radiographs, however, this exhibition would not have absorbed (that is, one meter of the machine), since we use appropriate X -ray security techniques throughout the hospital,” the memorandum obtained by the output states.

The MNA said he is working with the hospital, which says “only spoke with a small number of nurses and their environmental tests were not integral.”
“The hospital cannot make this problem disappear trying to provide a predetermined conclusion,” added the MNA. “While we cannot publish specific numbers or other diagnostic information, we are committed to being transparent about our findings when we have finished verifying the information we collect.
“Completing this step by step is essential to provide the support that Newton-Wellesley nurses deserve.”
