Christian Chukwu, former captain and coach of the National Soccer team of Nigeria, the Super Eagles, died at the age of 74. His death was confirmed on Saturday, April 12, 2025 by his former teammate, according to OdeGbami. Chukwu died in his hometown of Enugu, Nigeria.
Chukwu, affectionately known as “President,” led Nigeria to his first title of the African Nations Cup (AFCON) in 1980 as a team captain. He later trained the Super Eagles for third place in the AFCon 2004 in Tunisia.
Born on January 4, 1951 in Enugu, Chukwu spent his entire career as a player with Enugu Rangers, achieving multiple national titles. He obtained 54 caps and scored five goals for Nigeria between 1974 and 1981. As a coach, he handled teams, including Kenya’s national team and his beloved Rangers Enugu.
In 2019, Chukwu fought against health problems and received support from the Nigerian Federation of Football and Femi Femi Oteedola to receive medical treatment abroad.
The Nigerian Football Federation expressed a deep sadness for his death, describing Chukwu as “a strong, dedicated and disciplined leader inside and out of the field.”
Chukwu is survived by his wife and four children. His legacy as a player and coach has left an indelible brand in Nigerian football.
