Welcome Fast lit, Where I share short and sweet criticism of what I have been reading lately (or around) on the 15th of the month, and I invite you to do the same.

I’ve been reading a storm lately, but today’s list is really brief and sweet: I’m up to my knees Summer Reading Guide Prepare, but I will not tell you about those new books that I have been reading until May 15! But today I am happy to share two more a new book that I had to tell you immediately. (I’ve also been working on my German reading, but I don’t have any long -lasting book to inform there. Maybe one day soon?)

I hope you find something that seems intriguing for your tbr here (and in these comments), and I hope to navigate his Recent readings below. Thank you in advance for sharing your short and sweet criticisms with us!

How to read a bookHow to read a book

This was our selection of reading clubs of Mrs. Darcy de March Modern Darcy; I reread it just before our conversation with Monica Wood. This moving Maine’s novel, her first from the child one in every million, who also loved, centers three lonely people, two of whom are 60 years old, all connected by a terrible tragedy. Violet was only nineteen when, drunk and tall, caused the death of a beloved local teacher and was sentenced to twenty -eight months in prison. Harriet directs the group of books in the Women’s Prison, where inmates spend an hour a precious per month finding comfort by tearing the classics. And Frank is the victim’s widower, who fills his time voluntarily its maintenance services in the local bookstore. This 2024 summer reading guide is a deeply moving redemption story, second opportunities and the power of books. More information →

I have been waiting for this book by my friend Jessica Turner for a long time; It turned out to be an accidental match but suitable with The body keeps the score. In it, Jessica writes about how she was unexpectedly forced to, in a sense, to begin her adult life again: Jessica married Young, at age 22, but sixteen years after her marriage, her husband left as Gay and finally decided to divorce. This book is partly Memoirs and partly self -help: Jessica shares their history and offers encouragement to anyone who occupies a great disappointment (or who only fights with the sense that yes, wasn’t it supposed to be better than this?). When he faced this unwanted change in the structure of his life, Jessica decided that if he had to start over, he wanted to give everything, and here he documented how he afflicted, he made the best imperfect decisions he could, poured into relationships with family and friends, had new experiences and, ultimately, created a life with which he is happy and proud. The body keeps the score: brain, mind and body in the healing of traumaThe body keeps the score: brain, mind and body in the healing of trauma

I read this for the first time in 2019 after picking it out from the staff selection shelf in the Asheville Malprop Bookstore; I have intended to read it again for years and finally I did it after choosing it recently for my morning reading time. When I read it the first time, many of the concepts in it were completely new to me; This time I entered with a better understanding of trauma and how the brain and body affects. Here Van der Kolk explores how trauma affects the mind, brain and body and what can be done to cure trauma, with an intense approach to somatic therapy. This book was published in 2014, and in this relegated, I found myself quite curious about how an updated edition could be. More information →

PS Cleaning update: Because the 2025 summer reading guide falls on May 15, we will not quickly organize on May. We will resume our regular schedule, which is in or around 15 of the month, in June. Thank you!
