Beyoncé and Jay-Z are one of the most famous power couples in the world.

And they now have an equally famous family, with his daughter Blue Ivy, 13 and seven -year -old twins, Rumi and Sir.

But the mother, businesswoman and Beyoncé fashion designer, Tina Knowles, tells me that she “worries about reputation” has an impact on her grandchildren.

“If I had my first choice, they would not have to face the things with which they have to face as a child,” she said.

Knowles, 71, said for the moment, children are not too exposed to it.

“But one day, they will read the ignorance that people have put them about them, lies and all that,” she said. “And I worry about it.”

Despite these pressures, she says that Beyoncé and Jay -Z – who are notoriously deprived about their family life – do “incredible” work as parents.

“The truth is that they spend an abnormal time with their children and they have excellent relationships with their children,” she said.

“And they are just grandparents. I don’t think you could ask for better parents.”

Knowles speaks to BBC News before the publication of his new Memoirs, Matriarch.

He covers his childhood in Texas, the rise of his daughters and his last years, as a grandmother.

Knowles now has four grandchildren, including Julaz Smith, the son of his young daughter, the singer-songwriter Solange. She also considers herself as a grandmother of the children of the former children’s singer from Destiny, Kelly Rowland.

She says that she regularly sees all her grandchildren, describing them as “one of the greatest joys of my life”.

“(Blue Ivy and I) have a very narrow link,” she said about her older granddaughter.

“I am so happy that she has the impression that she can speak to me,” she said, adding that Blue Ivy always gives her advice on taking care of herself.

“It’s my beauty guru. It’s my manager,” she said.

I am intrigued by this and I ask why she calls the 13 -year -old woman.

“Well, I do not call her my manager. Everyone calls her my manager, because she is authoritarian. She is a little capricorn like me. So we have this link.”

Knowles grew up in Galveston from the 1950s and 60s, the youngest of seven years old.

In her book, she talks about the harassment that her family has been confronted, including the police.

“There has been a lot of racial tension,” she told me. “And I think that some things have changed, but I always think that blacks are more sensitive to police brutality (and) to stop.”

She met her ex-husband, Mathew Knowles, in Houston and the couple continued to have two daughters, Beyoncé in 1981 and Solange five years later.

Beyoncé, she writes, was “not an easy baby”. The nursery rhymes did not cut her (“she cried louder” to drown Mary had a little lamb), but the jazz music would calm her.

As a child, Solange was a “social butterfly” but Beyoncé was shy. “She entered each class while trying to be invisible,” writes Knowles.

She said at the time, her daughters – and all the little black girls – were “bombed” by messages from the general public culture that they were “less than”.

But Beyoncé still sang, and Solange’s talent appeared very early.

“I knew that Beyoncé had a very beautiful voice, but I did not know how talented she was until she was seven years old,” Knowles told me.

“And solange probably four because she just grew up around music and performance. So she was much earlier.”

Knowles is categorical not to have pushed his daughters in the music industry.

“Absolutely not. It was not my first choice for my daughters. They just lived and breathed in music,” she said.

“It is their decision. They were born to be artists.”

None of them – including Kelly Rowland, who moved in with the family – was very rebellious, she said. All they wanted to do was sing, dance and play.

“I wanted them to have this experience of the life of adolescents and go out to the holidays and have fun, but I had to force them to do so,” she said.

Destiny’s child has reached global renown

In the 1990s, the group of Destiny’s Child girls was formed. He originally understood Beyoncé, Rowland, Latavia Roberson and Letoya Luckett, but the last program was a trio – Beyoncé, Rowland and Michelle Williams.

The group has obtained world renown with mega strokes such as Bills, Bills, Bills, Say My Name and Jumpin ‘, Jumpin’.

Knowles, who headed a headliner of the hair salon and had learned sewing, made costumes for the group, while Mathew Knowles left his work to manage them.

Their daughters continued to forge an extremely successful solo career.

Solange won a Grammy Award for Cranes in the Sky, while Beyoncé had countless strokes, including single women, Crazy in Love, Halo and irreplaceable.

She finally won the best album to this year Grammy Awards – correct what was widely considered a historic wrong.

The star was recognized for his eighth album, Cowboy Carter, which celebrates and contextualizes the black roots of country music.

In an Instagram article before her album launch, Beyoncé said that Cowboy Carter was “born from an experience I had years ago when I did not feel welcome” which invented him to “dive deeper into the history of the country”.

Many interpreted this as a reference to its treatment at the 2016 Country Music Awards, where its papa lesson performance with chicks led to a barrier of criticism – and racism – online.

Knowles says that the childhood of Beyoncé, growing in Texas and spending time in Louisiana, influenced her music.

“She was very influenced by (Zydeco, a musical genre of Louisiana) and this culture and the culture of cowboy,” she says.

She added that it was “interesting” to hear some say that Beyoncé is “not western country” and should not make this kind of music.

“It is in her. It is in her right to make music that she feels.”

While his daughters went to international renown, they had to face media pressure and lagging behind – including, writes Knowles, speculation that Beyoncé was laughed at her pregnancy with blue ivy.

There was also a sadly famous argument between Solange and his brother-in-law Jay-Z In an elevator in 2014which was disclosed by the TMZ celebrity site.

Knowles refuses to be pulled on the elevator incident.

But when they were asked how she protects her daughters from comments and online lagging behind, she says that it is in fact they who protect her.

“They are very clever to block the bull and the lies. And do they hurt them? Of course, but they don’t even focus on that, ”she says.

“While the world creates lies and mess, my daughters are somewhere in the studio or with their children who take care of their business and live their best life.”

She refuses to take the merit of having kept her daughters to the earth.

“I have not kept them on the rights and narrow. They are just very sensible people with a balance in their lives,” she said.

Knowles also opens in his book on the diagnosis of stadium breast cancer in his left breast, after the doctors discovered two tumors.

She is now without cancer.

“My daughters and my faith transported me,” she wrote.

The next generation of superstars?

So what is the next step for this family of superstars?

Knowles is optimistic, saying “the sky is the limit” with regard to what his daughters could do next.

As for her grandchildren, she says they are fed in “everything they want for themselves … but certainly not pushed into the living room”.

At only 13 years old, Blue Ivy has already made progress in his career. Last year, she expressed the character of Kiara in the prequel to the King of the Mufasa lion: the king of the lion, and she also played alongside her mother during her Renaissance tour.

But Knowles says it is something that Blue Ivy had to “work for”.

“Because his mother was like no, you have time. You have to make sure that, you know, a lot comes with that.

“And so if something, they are maintained as the best possible human beings. This is the first priority.”

As for whether we can expect Matriarche to be adapted in a series of reality, Knowles is reluctant.

“Oh, not a series of reality, but you know, I spoke to people of the rights of the film and I would like to see a film made,” she said.

“One of my favorite films is the story of the jacksons. I and my children watched it so many times and I just think it would be great to see this on the film.”
