Former representative George Santos, whose network of lies about his life led to his expulsion from the Congress, was sentenced on Friday to more than seven years in prison in his case of federal fraud.
The New York Republican must also pay a restitution of $ 373,750, a judge ruled in the United States District Court in Long Island.
Santos admitted last August to participate in a multiple campaign financing scheme, stealing the unemployment benefits during the Covid-19 pandemic, and lying in the financial dissemination forms of the House of Representatives.
As part of an agreement with prosecutors, Santos declared himself guilty of a single charge of wire fraud and aggravated identity. He also agreed to restitution and confiscation for a total of almost $ 580,000.
Santos has asked Judge Joanna Seybert to sentence him only to the mandatory minimum of two years in prison. He argues that he accepted the responsibility of his actions and cooperated with prosecutors.
The United States Prosecutor’s Office for the Eastern District in New York asked Seybert to sentence Santos 87 months after bars.
In a judicial presentation last week, prosecutors told the judge that the recent series of social media publications of Santos shows that “he does not abmore his crimes.”
