Wrexham completed a notable trip by hitting Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday to ensure a historical promotion to the EFL championship.
Ollie Rathbone and Sam Smith scored only three minutes in the first half to put the Welsh club firmly in control. Smith, who joined a record agreement of £ 2 million, then sealed the victory with a third goal in the 81st minute.
The victory confirmed the second place of Wrexham in the League one and earned them automatic promotion, just behind Champions Birmingham City.
This extraordinary achievement marks Wrexham’s return to the second level of English football for the first time since its descent in the 1981-82 season.
Wrexham’s story is even more special, since they have now become the first team in the history of English football to achieve three consecutive promotions in the five main divisions.
The promotion for the promotion had been tight, with Charlton and Wycombe Wanderers still in dispute. However, Wycombe 1-0’s previous defeat against Leyton Orient meant that Wrexham only needed a victory, and delivered with style in front of their local fans.
