Israeli attacks near the Syrian presidential palace in Damascus, says Netyahu

The strike raises an additional challenge for the interim president of Syria. (Figurative)

Damascus, Syria:

Israel attacked an objective near the presidential palace in the Syrian capital Damascus, said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on early Friday, reiterating their vote of protecting members of the Druze community.

It marks the second time that Israel attacked Syria in so many days, following a promise to defend the minority group.

The strikes reflect the deep distrust of Israel of Sunni Islamists who knocked down Bashar al-Assad in December, raising an additional challenge for the interim efforts of President Ahmed al-Sharaa to establish control over the fractured nation.

“Israel attacked last night near the presidential palace in Damascus,” Netyahu said in a joint statement with Defense Minister Israel Katz.

“This is a clear message for the Syrian regime: we will not allow the forces (Syrian) to deploy south of Damascus or any threat to the Drouse community.”
