Monaco (AP) -Carlos Alcaraz moved to the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo Masters after beating the qualifier Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-1 on Thursday.
Alcaraz saved nine of the 10 rest points he faced and took five of the seven opportunities he had.
“Honestly, it was difficult, Danny is playing very well,” Alcaraz said the third classified. “The score doesn’t show how difficult it was.”
In his first Clay-Court tournament this season, the Spanish has won four consecutive sets for the loss of only five games since he dropped the opening set against Francisco Cerundolo in his Ronda match of 32.
Alcaraz plays on Friday against Arthur Fils, who won by an impressive 6-2, 6-3 against the 2023 champion Andrey Rublev in the 16 round.
Fils has advanced to the quarterfinals in three consecutive teachers after Indian Wells and Miami last month, and has raised his record to 14-6 this season.
Two more planted players were upset on Thursday.
The fourth sown Casper Ruud lost to Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 and Jack Draper of fifth sown was defeated by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4. The British left -handed Draper had service problems with 10 double failures and landed less than half of his first portions.
Davidovich classified in 42nd position, which eliminated Ben Shelton, a 11th American planted in the first round, faces Popyrin in the quarterfinals.
The three -time Monte Carlo champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas, was playing the late match against Nuno Borges not sown.
