The coach of South Africa, Hugo Broos, believes that his team can finish the top of group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, ahead of Nigeria and other rivals.
Bafana Bafana currently has a five -point advantage over Rwanda in second place, while Nigeria sits in fourth place with seven points after six games.
On Tuesday night, South Africa assured a 2-0 victory over Benin by Gernot Rohr. The striker Burnley Lyle Foster scored in the 53rd minute, and Jayden Adams sealed the victory with a late header.
However, South Africa could lose three points due to an administrative error. The midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who received two yellow cards at the beginning of the campaign, should have been suspended for his 2-0 victory against Lesoth last Friday, but was included by error in the team.
Despite this setback, Broos has urged his players to stay focused and avoid expensive errors as they approach the final phase of the qualifiers. He warned that the qualification is not yet insured.
Talking with Sowetan LiveThe Belgian coach said:
“We have to have confidence and not fear any team we play against. All we can do is keep working hard as we have been doing. We should not think that everything is already done. We are in a good position, but if we avoid silly mistakes, we are very close to the qualification.”
Super Eagles de Nigeria will aim to close the gap in South Africa when the two teams are in a crucial match in September 2025.
