Ottawa:
Canada said it will begin to impose a 25 percent rate on certain imports of US cars since Wednesday, taking reprisals against the taxes of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, on cars and pieces imported to his country.
“Canada continues to respond strongly to all unjustified and unreasonable rates,” said Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne in a statement on Tuesday about tariffs that enter into force at one minute after midnight.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the measures last week.
Canadian tariffs will be applied to all vehicles imported from the United States that do not meet an existing free trade agreement in North America.
This refers to cars and light trucks that are carried out with less than 75 percent of pieces of North America, approximately 10 percent of all the US ships from the United States to Canada, or around 67,000 vehicles per year.
“The government is firmly committed to eliminating these American tariffs as soon as possible, and will protect the workers, companies, economy and industry from Canada,” Champagne said.
