Gopro’s new action camera for 2024 is there to improve your content creation content. The hero 13 Black was launched in September alongside a new smaller hero camera. The new Gopro action camera is not a major upgrade of last year’s model in terms of equipment and design, but it compensates for a lot of new objectives, a new way of mounting, a larger battery and several other small improvements.
While the competition is there to try to court customers with improved sensors, faster chipsets and so on, Gopro sticks to the mantra `why repair something if it is not broken ”. New lenses, magnetic assembly and larger battery to win the action camera game? Read the review to find out.

Gopro Hero 13 Black Design: Aimments, finally!

The hero 13 Black is identical in dimensions to 12 blacks, but some design changes will help you differentiate them. Gopro got rid of blue spots that were found on the model of last year. It’s now all black, and a new heat -shaped design is at the front, just under the camera sensor. Gopro tells us that it is not a thermal sneer, unfortunately. The display sizes at the front and rear remain the same as the placement for the recording and fashion buttons. The battery door is also the same as last year.

You will find the most important design changes at the bottom, where the assembly system is located. In addition to the usual folding mounting fingers and the ¼-20 mounting wires, the GoPro now has a magnetic assembly. The magnetic lock makes it very easy to switch between the supports, and I found it more secure and easier to use than the competition. It tends to collect sand and other particles, which makes it difficult to clean.

The assembly of the lens coverage is similar to last year, but there is now a blue alignment point inside the cover and on the GoPro which facilitates the fixing of the coverage. The old hero 12 Black Lens Cover works with the new GoPro, and Vice Versa. However, new objectives are not compatible behind.
Gopro Hero 13 Camera, Black Functions and Performance: Minor improvements

Again, there are not many new ones in the camera and performance departments. However, you get small improvements and some new software features with the hero 13 Black. The older sensor and the processor are starting to show their age, but Gopro has managed to do more magic and add new features such as a missed idle video which allows you to record up to 400 IPS but to a low 720p resolution. You can also save at 360 IPS in 900p resolution and 120 IPS at 5.3K.
The action camera now also obtains an HLG HDR video, an improved journal profile, better personalization for pre -settlements, more audio adjustment options and a flexible rapid capture function that allows you to restart recording or go into inactive mode within 5 seconds while turning off in rapid capture. The hero 13 Black is now delivered with Wi-Fi 6.0 for faster transfer speeds, and GPS has made a return with the support for overlays.
Now let’s talk about performance. With the standard lens and the basic video / photo settings, the new hero 13 Black is not very different from the model from last year. I saw some differences in HDR recording with improved colors on the new camera, but above all, the performance is very similar. However, the new idle modes are pretty cool if you don’t mind a low video resolution; 400 IPS at 720p works well when there is a lot of light, and you can get really cool photos.
You get Hypersmooth 6.0, just like last year, and it still works incredibly although you do not try to shoot videos in low light conditions. The GoPro continues to work badly when there is not enough light. The competition is much better here, and it is high time that Gopro has done something on this subject.
There is also a new video recording option in appearance of aspect 1: 1, which is better than the ratio 8: 7 of last year. However, this ratio is only available with the new attachment to the ultra -wide objective.
Video quality is always first of all in daylight and you get impactful colors. However, the heating situation is always about the same as last year. I live in a coastal city, and it is quite hot here, so I suppose that the camera will work better without fresh ambient temperatures. The hero 13 Black also takes good photos in daylight.

Gopro has slowly added new objective options over the years. After the Max Mod objectives, this is the first time that the action camera has obtained new objectives. You could even call them the biggest upgrades this year, but not because they cost additional money. However, they make the camera versatile. You can get close plans, a cinematographic vagueness and an appearance 1: 1 relationship with the objectives. They also include automatic detection, which means that the hero 13 Black will define the best parameters as soon as you attach a goal.
Detection of automotive lenses and new objectives only work on the GoPro Hero 13 Black
First, the new ultra -wide objective has the same FOV (177 degrees) as the maximum maximum of last year, but now allows a new aspect report 1: 1. The new aspect ratio is ideal for those who do not want to take several plans for different social media. This is the best lens for action sports, but you cannot record Ultra-Swow-Movement videos with this goal.
Second, the new macro lens changes the basic experience of the Gopro action camera. The GoPro has never been really made to shoot vlogs or close plans. However, you can now do it with the Macro Lens Mod. You also get an adjustable focusing ring and a concentration peak. Although the macro lens has a minimum focus distance of 11 cm, which is not very close, it is ideal for an action camera. I had a lot of fun getting close -ups of objects with this goal. Again, the results are better when you shoot during daylight.
The anamorphic objective will be released in 2025
Third, there is a set of ND filters (4,8,16 and 32), which allows you to make a vagueness of the cinematographic movement during shooting action. The filters also help cutting severe lighting, and the camera will automatically detect the filter you have attached and tell you if you have to take a higher or lower step. Filming with ND filters gave my driving videos a cinematic sensation thanks to the movement of movement.
Finally, the anamorphic objective, which has obtained a lot of “AWES” during the launch event, will give you a nice field of cinematographic vision 21: 9. The GoPro will also automatically dedicate the images, so you do not have to do it later. Unfortunately, this lens will not come until 2025, and I could not try it.
Gopro Hero 13 Life of black battery: a little better
Very well, let’s talk about the battery life. Gopro now includes a new battery on the hero 13 Black, and it’s both good and bad. It is good because you now get a longer battery life of the camera, and bad because it is not compatible with any of the previous gopro and vice versa.
The hero 13 Black obtains a new 1,900mAh battery
There is a notable improvement in the battery life with the new Enduro battery, but that is not as much as Gopro claims. I managed to get 37 minutes of continuous recording (while stationary) to a 4K resolution (8: 7, 60 frames per second) before the GoPro stops due to overheating. It lasted longer during a motorcycle ride, about 50 minutes, thanks to the air flow.
Gopro Hero 13 Black Verdict
The new GoPro Hero 13 Black alone is not a big upgrade on the hero 12 Black, so if you have 12, you probably don’t need to get the new one. However, the new one brings a lot of versatility to the ultimate action camera. Then there is the magnetic assembly system and the slightly better battery life. The new GoPro is an excellent choice if you buy an action camera that you will mainly use during the day. It is also a good choice if you plan to obtain the attached attachments of the lens and to do more with your action camera. If it is the performance of Lowlight that you are looking for, look elsewhere.
