Vatican City:
Pope Francis was so close to death at a time during his fight at the hospital against pneumonia that his doctors considered to end the treatment so that the 88 -year -old pontiff could die peacefully, said the head of the Pope’s medical team on Tuesday.
After a breathing crisis on February 28 that involved Francis almost drowning in his vomit, “there was a real risk that he could not do it,” said Sergio Alfieri, a doctor at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.
“We had to choose if we stop there and let it go, or move forward and push it with all possible drugs and therapies, running the greatest risk of damaging its other organs,” Alfieri told Corriere della Sera de Italy.
Francis, Pope since 2013, was treated at the Gemelli hospital for 38 days in the most serious health crisis of his 12 -year -old papacy.
It was admitted on February 14 by an episode of bronchitis that became double pneumonia, an especially serious condition for Francis, which had pleurisia when he was a young adult and who eliminated a part of a lung.
