The former Manchester United star, Paul Scholes, criticized goalkeeper Andre Onana after two important mistakes cost the team in his 2-2 draw against Lyon on Thursday night.
Onana was to blame for both goals. His greatest mistake occurred in the 95th minute when he could not hold on to a shot by Georges Mikautadze. The ball spilled and Rayan Cheki reacted quickly to score Lyon equalizer.
Speaking in TNT Sports after the game, Scholes said:
“I think he was more blamed for the first goal. It was a big mistake. It was a bit more difficult to treat, but it still has to do better.”
Previously in the game, Onana had already given Lyon the lead when a cross judged, letting the ball go next to him and enter the network.
Despite the bad result, Scholes said that Manchester United is still in a solid position ahead of the second stage in Old Trafford.
“Lyon played the best football and created more opportunities. United will be disappointed, but they are still favorites at home. They just have to improve,” he added.
The game occurred a few days after the former United Namper midfielder Nemanja Matic described Ones “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the history of the club. Onana had previously stated that United was a better team than Lyon, a comment that did not age well after Thursday’s performance.
Onana, who joined United in 2023 for £ 47 million, has been under pressure due to several high profile errors. Statistics show that it has the worst percentage of clean sheet and the second savings rate of United Guardians since 2003-04 (with at least 900 minutes played).
With United fighting in the 13th place in the Premier League, the form of Onana is still a concern while the team struggles to rescue its season.
