Imagine sitting at home on your sofa when one of your hands begins to move on your own, and has no power to stop it.
That is what happened to an unidentified woman, 77, whom doctors diagnosed with “alien hand syndrome.”
The woman had been watching television when she noticed that her left hand was moving on its own, as possessed.
“His left hand stroked his face and hair without his will. He was terrified,” wrote the authors of the strange case study of 2014, which was published in Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings.
“His attempts to control the left hand with his right hand were not successful. He had no control of the left hand for almost 30 minutes, since he continued making useful movements.”
“The alien hand syndrome, or Dr. Strangelove’s syndrome, is an interesting situation in which a person loses control of his hand, which begins to act independently,” they wrote.
“The alien hand could grab things and the person could have to use the other limb to release the objects of it. At the ends, it has been reported that the alien hand even suffocate the patient.”
The condition is typically caused by brain trauma, stroke or neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
There is no cure, although the condition can be handled through behavioral therapy, such as maintaining the dishonest hand occupied with a task.
Symptoms can last days or years.
In the case of this old woman, this shocking phenomenon only lasted 30 minutes, the shortest duration recorded, although her left arm felt weak and fostered later.
Her husband helped her get to the hospital, which is when she noticed that she was dragging her left leg while walking.
Doctors believe that their alien hand syndrome could have been brought by a stroke after taking a break from taking their blood clot medication in anticipation of column surgery.
Little by little he regained control on the left side of his body for the next six hours and was sent home.
The first known case of the alien hand syndrome was informed by German neurologist Kurt Goldstein in 1908.
Ahs is sometimes called Dr. Strangelove’s syndrome, after the classic character of the film Stanley Kubrick whose uncontrollable hand tries repeatedly to perform Nazi greeting.
A famous case involved a woman who tried to board her shirt with her right hand, while her left hand unbuttoned her.
His left hand also sometimes removed his cigarette without his permission and slapped in his face.
