Many travelers to Barcelona, Spain, can be found in one of the most beautiful sacred places in the world: the sacred family.
The Basilica is the largest unfinished Catholic Church, attracting not only the faithful but to tourists everywhere.
Sagrada Familia attracts so many tourists that the city of Barcelona is now building a specific area only for visitors to take photos.
In an action plan created by the management of the tourism of Barcelona (BTM), the officials claim: “The area around Sagrada Familia was not designed for the intensive use it currently experiences.”
Public spaces in that area, according to the plan, have reached a “saturation point.”
The authorities say that “a job must be done to improve this space in the following areas of intervention: urban landscape, tourist attraction points, public space model and interruptions or transformations resulting from urban developments.”
One of the tourist attraction points is an area dedicated to taking images in a large place on the Gaudi plaque in front of the church front.
The Plaza will relieve congested sidewalks and leave space in front of local businesses that were previously blocked by tourists.
The Church was designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi from 1882.
Attracted 4.7 million visitors in 2023, according to BTM.
“A new design of the square would allow a (physical link) with Avinguda de Gaudí encouraging the flows to the Modernist complex of Sant Pau,” says the action plan.
According to BTM, it is estimated that the annual volume of visitors to the basilica and its surrounding area between 18 and 22 million people.
