The aviation industry is planning its greatest shaking in 50 years, and part of the main review means that there are no more shipping passes or registered for flights.
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the United Nations Agency that supervises many aspects of aviation, is getting rid of the existing rules for airports and airlines and, instead, creating a “digital travel credential,” said the UK Times.
With the new policy, passengers can load their passports and passport information to their phones and move through airports using only their face for identification.
The verification form will be available within “two or three years”, and consulting for online flights or at the airport will become something from the past.
“These changes are the largest in 50 years,” Valérie Viale, director of Amadeus Product Management, the world’s largest travel technology company, told The Times. “Many airline systems have not changed for more than 50 years because everything has to be consistent in the entire industry and interoperable.
Currently, air travelers should consult their flight online or once they arrive at the airport, where they receive a boarding pass with a barcode that scan on safety and the door before boarding.
According to the new plan, travelers will receive a “travel pass” on their phones when a flight is reserved, which will be automatically updated if changes are made in the reserve. The pass will also contain all the details of the passport.
Without check-in, the face of a passenger will be scanned when they arrive at the airport, alerting the airline of its intention to fly. That will happen in the bag bag for those who check the luggage, and for those with just a hand luggage, it will occur at the safety control points.
Then, the flyers would board the plane simply with biometric data since their passport will be in their travel pass. They could cross the airport without taking out their passport or phones.
“The last large -scale update was the adoption of electronic tickets in the early 2000s. The industry has now decided that it is time to update to modern systems that look more like Amazon would use,” said Viale.
The physical infrastructure of airports should be updated for the plan to work. Digital travel credentials would require airports to have facial recognition technology, as well as the ability to read a passport from a mobile device.
In particular, the Times reported that the infrastructure in airports would only verify that its face coincides with its passport: there would be no information storage, eliminating the risk of data violations. This is supposed to be just the beginning of the use of the new technology.
